SLPS: Let's Take Our Association Back by Amending ASHA's Bylaws
The Issue
Did you know that 69% of ASHA's yearly revenue comes from membership dues?
Did you know that ASHA's Board of Directors is responsible for approving all the policies that determine how ASHA spends your money?
Did you know that ASHA's members have a right to participate in its internal affairs, including changing its bylaws, electing and removing Directors of the Board?
As a dedicated member of the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), I have noticed a concerning trend. Despite ASHA's stated purpose to "promote the individual and collective professional interests of the members of the Association" as outlined in Item 9 of its bylaws, it appears that our association is falling short. The current budget and priorities do not seem to reflect an investment in measures that drive policy changes; particularly in areas such as insurance reimbursement, caseload caps, and other workplace protections for professionals like us.
The current bylaws can be amended by 2% of ASHA's membership (Article XV Section 15.2). This amendment will help ensure that ASHA is held accountable for fulfilling all nine purposes outlined in its bylaws, including promoting our professional interests.
As members, we have seen firsthand how these issues impact our work every day. We are on the front lines providing essential services yet are often overlooked when it comes to policy decisions that directly affect us.
We believe it is time for change within ASHA - a change that ensures we are adequately represented and protected within our own association. By amending these bylaws, we can ensure this happens.
Let's make sure our voices are heard loud and clear - sign this petition today to show your support for amending ASHA's current bylaws!
