Slow Down Around Florida Southern: Help Us Protect Our Cats and Students

The Issue

2023 has been absolutely devastating to our Florida Southern community. The college is home to approximately 30 campus cats which are a part of our TNR program. This year alone, SIX cats have been hit by cars. All six were left laying there. Not one had a chance to be saved or humanely put to sleep.

We understand that accidents happen, and that sometimes a collision cannot be avoided, but we cannot continue to go on like this. We love our campus cats as much as others love their personal pets. We are hurting, and we know our community is too. Something has to change, and we need your help.

Our campus cats are not the only ones at risk. This extends to the students and other members of the college community. Many students have nearly been hit by cars as well.

Primary areas of concern:

  • Lake Hollingsworth Drive between Ingraham and Johnson Avenue.
Possible solution: Lower speed limit, Raised Pedestrian Crossings, cat crossing signs.
  • Johnson Avenue going from Lake Hollingsworth to Frank Lloyd Wright Way.
Possible solution: flashing crosswalk signals, Raised Pedestrian Crossings, cat crossing signs.
  • Frank Lloyd Wright Way from Johnson Avenue to Duke Place or Hollingsworth Road if the area in front of Roberts Academy can be included.
Possible solution: Lower speed limit, flashing crosswalk signals, Raised Pedestrian Crossings, and cat crossing signs.
  • Ingraham Avenue from Frank Lloyd Wright Way to Lake Hollingsworth Drive.
    Possible solution: Flashing crosswalk signals.

We cannot do this without you. Please speak up. Please help us protect our community, both feline and human members of it.

Carrot
Carrot was loved by everyone, even those who weren't cat people. He was full of life, and happy. He purred loudly and constantly, always excited to meet a new friend. His eyes were so bright and expressive. He was always talkative and was an absolute joy to be around. October 24, 2023.

Jasper
Jasper’s life had only just begun. He was born sometime around the end of March/beginning of April with his brother and sister, Onyx, and Eloise. They lost their mother several weeks ago, and we don’t know if she just left or if something tragic happened. Jasper was shy but beginning to come out of his shell and show his sweet, playful personality. October 24, 2023.

Christina-Renee
Christina-Renee was young too. Barely two. She was tiny but mighty and had a feisty yet sweet personality. She kept all the other kitties at her station in line. She left behind her sister, Suzy Q. January 26, 2023.

Batman
Batman was another cat from the same feeding station. He loved the students, and they loved him. He was silly, adventurous, and sweet. Batman left behind his brother, Tommy Gray. Now all Tommy and Suzy have are each other. March 22, 2023.

Fuzzy
Fuzzy was an older cat, about 14 or so. He was incredibly wary of people, but had come a long way since his arrival on campus in 2017. Fuzzy was beginning to trust our Care Team more and more. While we were unsure of the cause of his passing at first, closer inspection showed trauma likely caused from a car. We found him on the evening of May 8, 2023.

It hasn’t just been these five. Over the years, we have lost many others in this same, terrible way.

Heckle and Jake’s mother was struck and killed on Ingraham. Tiger, Buffy, and Lily's mother was killed along Johnson Avenue.

Ranger was hit in front of the Communications Department on Johnson Avenue on March 8, 2015, and Clarice was hit near the Becker Business Building on May 5 of that same year. Ranger left behind his friend, Gerbert (Freddy) and Clarice left behind her brother Jocko and mother, Mama.

Little Bit and Beau
Little Bit, born in May of 2014, was hit along Lake Hollingsworth Drive on February 10, 2016. Her brother Beau suffered the same fate on December 5, 2018. Their brother and sister, William Wallace and Sandy, are left.

Mr. Bojangles

Mr. Bojangles had an incredible impact on the FSC Community. He was loved by students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Just like Carrot, Mr. Bojangles enjoyed meeting new friends. He too lived in the Courtyard. He had suffered severe injuries which were believed to have been caused by a car or a fall, and he was humanely put to sleep on May 12, 2016.
