Single mum sustains workplace injuries that put her in a wheelchair, seeks treatment help
The issue
Six years ago, I came to Australia with the hope of creating a better life for me and my then 10 year old daughter. I am independent, hardworking, responsible, respectful, and a dedicated mother. I love to support my community, especially other single mothers. In October 2020 though, my life changed forever.
One day at work as the supervisor of a private mental care facility, unfortunately I was (allegedly) physically attacked by a resident. I suffered a fracture to my face and contusions to my torso. In the weeks that followed, I was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and memory loss. I made compensation claims with WorkCover Queensland who helped provide some assistance at home.
As time passed though, I began to develop hearing loss, momentarily blurred vision, problems communicating, among other things. In fact, three months ago I was admitted to to the hospital after 17 fainting spells, migraines, loss of body movement and speech impairment.
I have recently been diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) but WorkCover QLD hasn’t accepted this diagnosis so I haven’t been able to start my treatment. I’m afraid if I don’t get the help I need, I might become paralysed permanently. I’m calling on the state government to step in and get WorkCover to acknowledge my FND diagnosis.
FND means that my neurological or parasympathetic nerves aren’t connected to the brain. My life has dramatically altered since this brain injury. My condition is degenerative. I’m already in a wheelchair and my movements are increasingly limited. I know this is a complicated situation but I deserve to be dealt fairly.
This situation has put me, my daughter, and my family in a vulnerable physical, emotional, psychological, and economic situation.
Please sign my petition to support me in my fight to receive the treatment I deserve. I don't know if I'm going to be the same person by the time they finally decide to approve the treatment.
