Give all babies who are born with heart murmur after the first three days of life an ultrasound before being discharged home.
The Issue
My son was born with a very significant heart murmur. He was feeding well and looked healthy and I was told if anything serious was wrong he would show signs. Nobody seemed remotely concerned that he had a grade 4 heart murmur. It was so loud you could hear it just putting your ear to his chest and you could feel it through his chest. Despite this and my constant worry which I ex pressed to every member of staff who would listen, we were discharged. Jacob was given an appointment at four weeks old with a nurse to see if it was still there.. It was as loud as ever. Still unconcerned they booked him in for an echo in September.
The next week Jacob became breathless... I took him straight to the gp who had one listen and rushed him into hospital, a chest x ray showed Jacob was in the early stages of heart failure. We were devastated. We had to wait another two days for an emergency echo. This revealed a large hole so he was then transfered to the care of Leeds specialist heart unit. The cardiologist performed a more detailed echo where he discovered Jacob had tetralogy of fallot a complex heart condition that without surgery he would die.
Jacob has now had surgery and is doing well. But had to wait until he was in heart failure before his heart murmur was taken seriously.
Please sign my petition to have all newborn babies with heart murmurs present for more than three days thoroughly checked before being discharged. Jacob is proof that just because they look well doesn't mean they are. 1 in 125 births are affected by congenital heart disease and not all defects are picked up during pregnancy.
