Stop government funding for greyhound racing abuse.
The Issue
We’re calling on Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed to stop giving €16 million (as of Budget 2017) to the Irish Greyhound Board.
This is an increase of €1.2 million from Budget 2016, and the most that has ever been allocated to the industry. Since 2001 the industry has received nearly a quarter of a billion in Irish taxpayers money.
The greyhound racing industry is the cause of thousands of greyhound deaths every year.
Between 2010 and 2015, 105,000 greyhounds were born but only 94,405 were registered to race. That means that more than 10,000 are still unaccounted for.
An estimated 38 greyhounds are put down every month in Irish pounds when then they're discarded for not racing well. Between 2010 and 2014 just under 3,000 were destroyed.
Other greyhounds that perform badly are hung, drowned, shot, burned alive and thrown off cliffs. Many have their ears hacked off or scalded with battery acid in order to remove identification tattoos.
In 2016 a greyhound was found in a ditch where she was left to die with both of her ears burned with battery acid and her tail cut off.
In 2015 11 greyhounds were found dead on an Irish ferry after suffocating in an overcrowded storage.
In 2012 the mass grave of greyhounds was unearthed in Limerick.
Many greyhounds are also exported to countries with little or no laws concerning animal welfare.
Irish greyhounds are exported to hunt in Spain where they are hung when they don't perform well, sometimes still touching the ground to prolong their suffering.
Irish greyhounds have also been exported to the Canidrome greyhound stadium in Macau, where no dog has ever gotten out alive and they are killed like clockwork.
We call for an end to the government funding millions towards greyhound cruelty, to stop the export of Irish greyhounds to suffer in another country and for a ban on greyhound racing. Animals are not ours to use and abuse as we deem fit. We need to fight against the exploitation of greyhounds and all animals under the false pretense of entertainment.
