The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) plans to demolish the Jones Island Rear Lighthouse, a 130-year-old cultural landmark vital to the history and economy of the Greater Parry Sound area.

Despite its Recognized Federal Heritage Building status, the CCG intends to replace it with an 80-foot steel tower, claiming the original structure is beyond repair. Local community members and observers dispute this, noting the lighthouse remains structurally sound. Under the Treasury Board’s Directive on Management of Real Property, the government must make "best efforts" to preserve heritage value and provide rigorous justification for any demolition.

This petition requests that National Defence and the CCG:

• Provide an independent engineering assessment of the lighthouse’s structural integrity.
• Release formal documentation justifying the decision to demolish this landmark.
• Disclose the maintenance records for the structure.
• Present a full financial analysis comparing the cost of restoration versus the total cost of demolition and new construction.
