Your passion, donations and messages of support to see the Aboriginal flag permanently fly on the Sydney Harbour Bridge has been nothing short of incredible. To each and everyone of you, I say thank you.
Our Premier told ABC TV on Wednesday “I think it’s about time we recognise the tens of thousands of years of the First Nations people of this continent,” despite rejecting the plan to fly the Aboriginal flag on the Sydney Harbour Bridge every day.
“And I think it’s about time that we start recognising that in all of our national symbols and all of our national ways in which we represent ourselves,” she said.
But why does our Premier feel differently about flying the Aboriginal flag on the Harbour Bridge giving it equal status to the Australian flag?
Last year, the Premier said she believed the current arrangement, where the Aboriginal flag flies 15 days a year, is “in line with community expectations” and indicated she was more interested in “meaningful” initiatives to better indigenous lives.
However, it seems she has had a change of heart and I need your help to focus her attention to the campaign in light of NAIDOC Week.
Will you spend 5 minutes contacting the Premier, Gladys Berejilklian https://www.nsw.gov.au/premier-of-nsw/contact-premier
Some key messages could be:
By keeping the flag up past NAIDOC Week will signify a powerful statement that the flag isn't just a symbol, it's a reminder the country has a history beyond European arrival.
It's a powerful initiative which will prove the Premier truly believes in equality and meaningful initiatives for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and;
Will stand true to the Premiers statement - “I think it’s about time we recognise the tens of thousands of years of the First Nations people of this continent,”
Thanks for your ongoing support and please send your response to me at reconcilewithourflag@gmail.com.
Please, continue to share the petition this week to remind your family and friends that we should acknowledge Aboriginal culture every week.
Always was...Always will be, Always should.
