The Analog Revival began with something simple: a lifelong relationship with physical things.
As a child, I grew up surrounded by records, books, magazines, and other remnants of a world that had existed before I was old enough to understand it. Years later, I was the kind of teenager who would sit down and fix a broken cassette player rather than give up on it.
Those experiences stayed with me.
Not because technology is bad.
Not because the past was better.
But because there are things we develop through physical experience that technology cannot simply replace.
The ability to write by hand.
To repair rather than replace.
To create with our hands.
To read deeply.
To discover rather than simply consume.
To spend time together.
To build communities.
To experience the physical world.
Artificial intelligence is now transforming the world around us. It is improving medicine, scientific research, education, communication, accessibility, and countless aspects of everyday life.
We welcome that progress.
But technological progress alone does not define human progress.
The question is not whether we should choose technology or humanity.
The question is whether we can develop both.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Human capability is developed through learning, practice, experience, creativity, craftsmanship, cooperation, and direct engagement with the world.
These experiences matter in childhood and adulthood.
Writing by hand, reading physical books, making things, repairing objects, learning practical skills, creating art, playing music, volunteering, gathering with others, and participating in communities are all ways people develop and exercise capabilities that remain important in a technologically advanced society.
At the same time, libraries, museums, cultural institutions, workshops, repair businesses, community spaces, and other physical places preserve knowledge and create opportunities for people to meet, learn, create, and participate.
These are not relics of the past.
They are part of the human capacity we carry into the future.
THE ANALOG REVIVAL
The Analog Revival is a global movement dedicated to strengthening human capability alongside technological progress.
It is not a movement against artificial intelligence.
It is not a movement against innovation.
It is not a movement against digital technology.
It is a movement for human capability alongside technology.
We believe technological progress should expand human opportunity while leaving room for the skills, relationships, creativity, curiosity, craftsmanship, discovery, and physical experiences that help people remain capable and connected.
The future should strengthen both.
WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR
By signing this petition, you express support for the principles of the Analog Revival and for efforts to translate those principles into practical initiatives and public policy.
Your signature supports:
• The Analog Revival Charter, a voluntary global framework for strengthening human capability.
• The Analog Revival Act of 2029, a proposed U.S. legislative framework addressing education, community spaces, cultural preservation, repair, human agency, and technological progress.
• Efforts by governments, educational institutions, libraries, museums, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and communities to develop initiatives that strengthen human capability alongside technological advancement.
The Charter is global in scope.
The Act is one possible national expression of those principles within the United States.
Other countries and communities may develop their own approaches according to their institutions, laws, cultures, and priorities.
