The Issue
Residents witness daily the overwhelming number of buses and cars clogging our neighborhood streets, many repeating the same routes as they make their way to Forest Hills. The commuter rail system, which should be a convenient alternative, is inaccessible to many due to its higher fares (Zone 1) at Roslindale, West Roxbury and Hyde Park stations, encouraging residents to drive to Forest Hills or forego public transit as an option all together. The impact of these choices is seen in the increased traffic, road congestion, decreased pedestrian/bike safety, and strains on neighborhood infrastructure.
Massachusetts House Bill H.3638 moves to designate all commuter rail stops within Boston's city limits to fare zone 1A, thus significantly lowering travel costs for our residents. Such a measure will not only make public transport more affordable but will also encourage greater use of the commuter rail, reducing road traffic and pollution. Most importantly, it will provide improved transit access and equity for residents that rely upon public transit or want to use mass transit, but are priced out or strained by the high cost.
We also support House Resolution H.3733. This resolution requests the study on the feasibility of extending the Orange Line beyond Forest Hills. Such an extension holds the promise of better connecting the residents of Roslindale and potentially West Roxbury to our T system and the rest of the city. This would lead to increased ridership, less traffic congestion, and better connection to our city which can have big impacts on our small businesses and neighborhood economies.
These actions are more than just transit improvements; they are vital steps towards creating a more equitable Boston—where every citizen has easy access to affordable public transportation. By endorsing these measures, you can help foster a better, more sustainable and prosperous future for Roslindale, Hyde Park and West Roxbury.
