The Asian American & Pacific Islander communities come together for a National Day of Action on Monday in the fight against Public Charge.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued a regulation change expanding the definition of "Public Charge". Public Charge applies to non-citizen immigrants who access public cash benefit programs, but now will be expanded to health care, food stamps, and housing services.
Being ruled as a Public Charge by the government can impact legal immigration statues (visa statuses, legal permanent residency, citizenship applications, or the ability to sponsor family members over).

There are millions of non-citizen immigrants who access these programs and could be impacted by this regulation change, so we are concerned that they might not enroll or renew these programs in fear of becoming a public charge. This regulation is not final yet and there is a 60 day public comment period that ends on December 10th.

We stand with Asian and all immigrant community groups who are collecting public comments against this dangerous regulation, and we hope you will stand with us on behalf of those who can’t or might be in fear of speaking up. The comment portal can be found here (tinyurl.com/notopcahs) and we hope you will do so before December 10th.
