Shut down William Head Institution/Prison
The Issue
The proximity of William Head Institution, a minimum-security prison, to our communities in Metchosin and Victoria, British Columbia, is a ticking time bomb. As a concerned resident of Victoria, I have been deeply disturbed by reports of prisoners escaping the facility, creating fear and jeopardizing the safety of our region.
In 2019, the unthinkable happened. Two convicts managed to escape from William Head Institution, leading to the tragic murder of a local resident in Metchosin. This horrifying incident is not an isolated case. There have been multiple reports over the years of prisoners escaping, arousing intense concern and fear within the community. We cannot afford to wait for another tragedy to strike before taking action.
Statistics repeatedly show that minimum-security prisons like William Head are not adequately equipped to manage high-risk offenders. The risk posed to the local community by these escape incidents is unacceptable and avoidable. Information from Correctional Services shows a troubling pattern of lax security measures which make the escape of potentially dangerous individuals more likely.
It is imperative that the safety of local residents takes precedence. By shutting down William Head Institution, we can prevent further endangerment of our communities and seek alternative solutions that ensure both the security and rehabilitation of inmates elsewhere.
We call upon the federal and provincial governments to act decisively. Relocate the inmates to more secure facilities and repurpose the William Head grounds for safer, community-focused use. The government's action is necessary to protect Metchosin and Victoria residents from further risk and to honor the memory of those who have already suffered due to this institution's failings.
