Shut down the Parrot Stand in Old San Juan
La causa
There is a parrot stand in Old San Juan ( Calle del Recinto Sur and Calle Tanca) that abuses their parrots.
- It deprives them from sleep, they are in the streets of Old San Juan from early in the morning to as late as 2:00 AM. Parrot needs 10-12 hours of sleep, not getting these hours messes up with their hormones and well-being.
- It does not provide enough perches for their birds. The only perch these parrots have is smooth, parrots need more than just one perch. Since they’re spending 12+ hours in a same perch, these birds will develop atrophy in feet or bumble foot.
- Falsely advertised birds as trained when in reality their wings are clipped. Clipped wings without other enrichment leads to depression and muscle atrophy. These people failed to train the birds so they decided to mutilate them for profit.

4. Finally, the reason we can confirm that these parrots are abused is that they pluck their feathers. Parrots often hide their illnesses to be safe from predators but a clear sign of abuse, depression and illness is the plucking of feathers. Multiple of these birds have visible patches that indicate feather plucking so that means their living conditions are not up to standard.a Marquesa, The Manatee Conservation Center, or Parque de las Ciencias, where they can live out their life in good conditions.
I urge you to sign this petition to set a clear example that in Puerto Rico we won’t let animals be exploited.
