Shut Down Ritz-Carlton Hotel Threatening Kenya's Wildlife
The Issue
Kenya's Maasai Mara is one of the last places on Earth where the Great Migration still moves freely—millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other wildlife crossing a landscape their ancestors have traveled for generations.
But today, that ancient pathway is being squeezed by a $5,000‑a‑night Ritz-Carlton safari camp built directly beside one of the most critical migration corridors.
Maasai communities, who have protected this land for centuries, warned from the beginning that the lodge would block the route used year after year by the animals that define this ecosystem. Conservation scientists echoed those concerns. And now there are reports and video evidence of animals turning back or struggling to pass through an area they once navigated with ease.
Despite this, the camp opened anyway.
This is more than a land dispute. It is a threat to one of the world’s greatest natural wonders—and a violation of the rights of the Maasai, who have watched tourism explode while their own connection to the land is pushed aside. Once a migration corridor is broken, the damage is almost impossible to undo. Wildlife populations crash. Ecosystems collapse. Future generations lose what they were never given a chance to save.
We stand with Maasai leader Meitamei Olol Dapash, conservationists, and local communities who are now fighting in court to protect their home.
We’re calling on Marriott International, Lazizi Mara Limited, Narok County, and the Kenya Wildlife Service to shut down the Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp, remove the infrastructure, and restore the land to its original condition.
Luxury tourism should never come at the cost of Indigenous rights, endangered wildlife, or the survival of a global ecological treasure.
Protect the Maasai Mara. Protect the migration. Shut this camp down.
