Shut Down Necropedia for Spreading Harmful Celebrity Death Hoaxes
Shut Down Necropedia for Spreading Harmful Celebrity Death Hoaxes
The Issue
As someone who has seen deeply harmful information on Necropedia, I can no longer stay silent. This website takes pleasure in publishing hoaxes about celebrities' deaths, causing tremendous distress to countless people around the globe. Despite its disruptive role, Necropedia continues to operate, while other websites that could be providing crucial mental health support resources are underrepresented.
False news of any kind, especially concerning death, can bring about significant psychological distress. Studies indicate that exposure to false information can lead not only to emotional distress but also to problematic social and political consequences. In this digital age where 'sharing' is a simple click away, the spread and impact of such hoaxes are unprecedented (Source: American Psychological Association).
What we need instead are more platforms to promote constructive discussions around mental health. According to a report by the World Health Organization, nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental disorder never seek help from a health professional. The stigma surrounding mental health is still strong, and we need all the help we can get to break it.
It’s time to stand against Necropedia's harmful practices and demand its shutdown. We need to prioritize mental health support over the dissemination of misinformation and harmful contents. Sign this petition to demand an end to Necropedia and a rise of more mental-health focused platforms.
