The Issue

The Blue Zoo Aquarium in Baton Rouge may call itself educational, but what’s really happening behind the glass tells a different story. This interactive aquarium, located inside the Mall of Louisiana, encourages the public to handle wild animals—many of whom are confined to cramped, artificial enclosures under bright lights and endless noise. These conditions are not only unnatural, they’re deeply stressful and harmful to the animals trapped inside.

Across the country, interactive aquariums operating in malls have become infamous for documented cases of neglect, public safety risks, and repeated animal suffering. Facilities like these are often understaffed, poorly regulated, and focused on profits over welfare. Blue Zoo is no exception.

In other locations, visitors have reported animals injured during public encounters, left without veterinary care, or exposed to unsanitary environments. When wild animals are reduced to photo ops and forced interactions, it’s not just dangerous for them—it’s dangerous for us. Direct-contact enclosures have led to bites, scratches, and the spread of illness. This is not conservation. It’s a business model built on exploitation.

The Louisiana public deserves better. Children should learn to respect animals in ways that foster empathy, not encourage poking and petting. And animals deserve to live in environments where their needs come before ticket sales.

We’re calling on the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Mall of Louisiana management to take immediate action: Shut down Blue Zoo Baton Rouge and rehome the animals to reputable sanctuaries where they can finally receive proper care.

SeaQuest, a similar chain of mall-based aquariums, has already had five locations shut down after years of violations, injuries, and public backlash. It’s time to apply the same pressure here—before more animals suffer.

Interactive aquariums have no place in our communities. Let’s send a clear message that Louisiana will not tolerate animal mistreatment disguised as family fun.

Sign now to demand the closure of Blue Zoo Baton Rouge and help protect animals from further harm.
