M&G QLD’s Executive Director, Rebekah Butler, met with Professor Heather Zwicker, Executive Dean of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, to express the sector’s deep concerns about the discontinuation of The University of Queensland's Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies programs and its impact on our future workforce.
Professor Zwicker indicated that while consulting with the sector would not have changed the University’s decision, the sector’s concerns have been acknowledged. She also indicated that the University would endeavour to engage with the sector to explore the possibility of alternative, sustainable program offerings going forward. It is understood that this messaging was also conveyed by members of The University of Queensland’s Senate when they met and endorsed the proposal to discontinue the Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies programs, on 25 June 2024.
Although M&G QLD has not been able to influence the University’s position, our campaign has had an impact, and The University of Queensland has demonstrated a willingness to consider other options in the future.
M&G QLD intends to keep this petition open to gather further support to demonstrate the need and value of specialised tertiary edcuation programs for the GLAM sector in Queensland.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to and supported this campaign.
