Build a public dedicated pickleball complex in Spokane so all can play and learn!

The Issue

Millions of Americans became stuck in a rut of isolation and apathy as a result of the pandemic. I was one of them. And like so many others, pickleball helped me get moving again, get out from behind a screen, and make physical play a regular part of my life again. While my story is far from unique, it's only one reason why pickleball is making such a positive impact in communities across the world.

I was introduced to pickleball at a local Spokane park. Though I had a blast playing from the very beginning, I didn't play that often due to the challenges of scheduling, and not knowing many other players. It wasn't until joining a private club that my frequency of play and the resulting impact on my life increased dramatically. The club's calendar of organized play made it easy to show up and play even when I didn't know anyone. I like playing at these types of clubs and still do today, but I also know that it's not an option for everyone.

That's why we are starting this petition to construct a public pickleball complex in Spokane to make it easy for anyone to show up, get plugged in, and start playing. And for anyone concerned – this isn't about out-competing private pickleball. Investing in public courts will grow the sport and subsequently increase the number of people willing to pay for the benefits offered by private membership. It's a win-win.

Combinations of public and private funding have built amazing complexes that support thriving pickleball scenes in nearby places like Coeur d'Alene, Kennewick, and all across the nation. Complexes of dedicated pickleball courts with publically available programming and events, systems for court rotation, and new player orientations make it easy for anyone to show up, find a game, and get plugged into the community.

If you didn't already know, pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America, attracting people from all walks of life. It is a low-impact activity suitable for all ages and fitness levels, making it an ideal choice for anyone looking to be active while having fun.

Our local Spokane Pickleball Facebook group has 2000+ members and receives daily requests asking questions like, "How can I start playing?", "Where can I learn?", and "Where can I find 'X' level of experienced players in Spokane?" There is clearly a demand for accessible pickleball facilities within our city. By fulfilling this need, we will encourage more people to engage in physical activity while promoting social interaction among residents and visitors.

We are urging local authorities and decision-makers to consider the following benefits that dedicated pickleball courts would bring:

  1. Health Benefits: Playing pickleball improves cardiovascular health, enhances hand-eye coordination, promotes weight loss, reduces stress levels, and increases overall fitness.
  2. Social Connection: Public pickleball courts will serve as a gathering place for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. It will facilitate new friendships, strengthen community bonds, and combat social isolation.
  3. Economic Boost: The construction of a pickleball court complex will attract visitors from neighboring areas, boosting tourism and local businesses. Picklers love to pack a paddle wherever they go! The courts could host organized events and tournaments, which would generate revenue for our city.
  4. Active Aging: Pickleball is an excellent sport for seniors as it provides a low-impact workout that improves balance, agility, and joint flexibility. By investing in public pickleball courts, we prioritize the health and well-being of our aging population.
  5. Intergenerational Friendships: What's even more amazing is that youth and seniors can play this game together while building valuable intergenerational friendships. Pickleball is truly an ageless sport.
  6. Public Safety: Individuals feel safer in public when there is a consistent flow of other people around. The constant presence of pickleball players in our parks would be a major deterrent to illegal activity, which prefers to exist in isolation.

As you can see, Spokane would benefit tremendously from the development of a public pickleball complex. Help us build a thriving recreational scene where anyone can come learn, play, and fall in love with this incredible sport.
