The Issue

Ever since I was a young girl, I've always had a deep fascination with cars, trucks, motorcycles, and anything with an engine. As the years went on, I grew from dreaming of becoming a NASCAR racer to developing a passion for becoming an auto mechanic. And, as my dreams are becoming a reality, I noticed that out of all the careers represented through Barbie, I've never once seen an auto mechanic Barbie.    Although I often played with Hot Wheels and monster trucks rather than Barbies, I feel it is incredibly important to represent the women within the automotive industry as well as inspiring the young girls who may be interested in pursuing a future in this field. For many young children, toys are one of the first ways they begin imagining who they could become in the future. And when children see certain careers represented in toys, it helps normalize these paths and makes them feel achievable. While the automotive world is full of many talented and hard-working women, they are still extremely underrepresented in both media and toys.    By introducing an "Auto Mechanic Barbie", the growing number of women working in the automotive industry would be highlighted while also encouraging young girls to explore interests in STEM, engineering, and skilled trades. This type of doll would not only celebrate the women already in the automotive field, but would also empower the next generation of girls to pursue careers that may not be traditionally marketed for them.    The automotive industry has historically been male-dominated, but that only motivates me more to pursue my dreams and help break the stereotype. As my career progresses, I hope to show that passion, skill, and dedication - not gender - are what truly matter within this profession. By continuing to follow my passion, I hope to not only build a successful career for myself, but also encourage other young women to feel confident stepping into spaces where they may not always see themselves represented.    By creating a Mechanic Barbie, Mattel would continue its mission of showing children that Barbie can be anything - including a skilled mechanic who keeps the world moving. And, in turn, show children that they too can be anything.
