Thousands of cows and buffaloes are suffering in silence, their voices unheard

Cows are worshipped in India. They are called ‘mata’ (mother) by many. And yet we see hundreds of cows sitting on the roadside, eating garbage, with no one to care for them.

Is this how we treat our mother?

A recent inspection by the Delhi government has found out that thousands of cows and buffaloes are deprived of basic provisions for survival in the city’s 10 dairy colonies.

They do not have regular access to feed or water, they are tied to a spot for many hours, they do not have any healthcare and many times their wounds are left untreated.

I am deeply shocked to know about the appalling treatment of these animals.

Even the National Green Tribunal (NGT) took note of the inspection report of the Delhi government and found that helpless and pathetic conditions of animals were being exploited for commercial gains in the dairies.

When I read more on this issue, I found out that as per global animal welfare charity World Animal Protection, an estimated 50 million dairy animals suffer every day in India.

A significant number of these suffer the worst cruelty as they live in unacceptable conditions in these dairies that are functioning in our cities.

This is an outrage! We must take action.

These dairy animals deserve to roam free, with ample feed and water and proper medical care. That can only happen when these dairies are moved out of our city.

The 10 dairy colonies in Delhi were essentially industry plots, many of which came up in the 1980s, but over the years they have become dense residential areas.

Consequently, the space for these dairy animals has gradually reduced, leading to this dire situation.

Sign my petition asking Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal to shift these dairies outside the city limits for the sake of the thousands of cows and buffaloes.
