Shelters over Streets

The Issue

I was reading a petition to reverse the court’s order on stray dogs.

I couldn’t help noticing the pictures — adorable puppies, behind bars. (In reality, it’s just cameras carefully positioned so that even the fence looks like a prison.)

For God’s sake, stop the theatrics! Let’s get real.

Yes, dog shelters may not be world-class, but would you rather see them stay on the streets — living in filth, starving, dying in the cold, and suffering without medical care?

Does it not bother anyone that stray dogs are injured or killed daily by speeding cars? How are they safe on streets? And How many of us actually take them to a vet or give them a proper burial?

Yet the outrage is not about them dying on the roads… it’s about them being taken to shelters.

It’s imperative that our focus shifts towards the real issue at hand :

  1.  Improving the living standards in these shelters.
  2. Raising funds to build more and better private shelters.
  3. Why not consciously choose to adopt the very dogs you claim to fight for — instead of buying imported breeds?
  4. Why not visit shelters regularly, instead of tossing a biscuit on the street.

Throwing a treat is easy. It’s fun to watch them wag their tails, difficult to commit a regular visit to shelter homes.

Stray dogs have become like live Netflix- get your two minutes of entertainment, then go back to your party.

This is not about punishing dogs - It’s about protecting them and protecting you.

Rabies is a slow, agonizing death — and it’s still very real. In 2024 alone, India recorded 37,17,336 dog bite cases and 54 deaths.
