This bridge was removed in 1987 (28 years ago.)  A pedestrian bridge was put in its place.  The walking bridge had become so unsafe that it was closed and then removed.   Now there is nothing there but jersey barriers.  Stillwater Road and Cross Street is extremely narrow and was never meant for all the traffic that has dramatically increased over the years to be driven on a daily basis by trucks and cars speeding.  It is extremely dangerous for the residents, children and cars in the area.  Drivers speed through this narrow strectch.  Winter months are another story, it is extremely dangerous.  We, the residents, want the bridge replaced as a driving bridge not a walking bridge. We've been told this is a State of Rhode Island Bridge not a Town of Smithfield Bridge.  This will help our community by alleviating the traffic on Cross Street, diverting cars through Stillwater Road out to Farnum Pike and making the streets safer to drive on.
