Shelby County Ohio Snow Emergency Levels
The Issue
Shelby County is currently one of the few counties in Ohio that chooses not to declare official winter road condition levels (Level 1, 2, or 3 snow emergencies). While surrounding counties provide clear, legally backed warnings, Shelby County leaves the decision entirely up to individual motorists. While we understand that some people believe individuals should be able to use their own common sense to determine the best course of action for each individual or family, we also understand that this is not an option for those that work within Shelby county as the companies attendance policies may make the decision for the worker without consideration of common sense decisions in inclement weather..This lack of policy creates severe safety risks and intense employment friction. Local workers are routinely forced by their employers to commute on treacherous, uncleared roads because no official emergency has been declared to legally justify a work absence or closure. We formally request that the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, in coordination with the Emergency Management Agency, formally adopt and utilize the standard Ohio Snow Emergency Level system. Adopting this policy will provide vital transparency, hold employers accountable to standard safety parameters, and prevent unnecessary accidents on our roadways.
