Nick Clegg MP joins the Campaign! Copy of Letter to Cllr Fox 05.06.15

Jun 12, 2015 — Dear Cllr Fox,

This morning, I accompanied a large group of local residents on Rustlings Road to discuss the felling of trees planned by the Council/Amey. I know that you are meeting with some of the campaigners on Monday and wanted to give you my thoughts prior to that taking place.

After walking along Rustlings Road and speaking to over 60 local residents, I have to confess that I share their sincere concerns about the felling of mature trees, not just along Rustlings Road, but in the Sheffield area more widely.

To me, there seems to be no rational reason as to why these trees should be taken down — these trees help to make Sheffield such a green, welcoming place to live and visit and Sheffield City Council should seek to do everything within its power to preserve them.

Crucially, I feel that this is a citywide issue. There are many trees which are reaching maturity in Sheffield, having been planted many years previously, and this is an appropriate time to ask whether more efforts should be made to keep them.

Along with local residents, I am therefore calling for the following three things:

1. That a moratorium of at least two months is called on the felling of mature trees in Sheffield, so that we can have a proper discussion about the future of our trees.

2. That a review of the citywide policy on the future of our trees takes place -preferably with an independent tree specialist at the helm.

3. That there is proper publication of the existing guidelines and a full, unredacted copy of the contract the Council has with Arney on its resurfacing programme is made available.

I look forward to your considered response on the points I have raised above and do very much hope that you can support Sheffield residents by saving these trees.

Yours sincerely

Nick Clegg MP
