Sharpening Research Skills for Tomorrow’s Innovators

Sharpening Research Skills for Tomorrow’s Innovators
The Issue
According to UNESCO, the ideal number of research scientists and engineers (RSEs) must be 380 per million population to aid industrialization. A report by the National Academy of Science and Technology reveals that in 2017, the gap was 110 RSEs per million. A recent list shows that there are more than 7,000 published researchers across all disciplines in the country. According to Scival, the number of publications of several Philippine universities has also been increasing since the early 2000s. The number of papers that are Scopus-indexed has increased on average by 13.33% per year from 2012 to 2021 (Dela Cruz et al., 2023). It reveals the below-average research production of the Philippines with no immediate signs of moving nearer the ASEAN average research production curve.
Our young learners are the heart of our community, and many of them have the potential to excel in scientific inquiry and research. However, some students lack access to foundational knowledge and practical support that is essential for their growth in these fields. By fostering a culture of research and inquiry, we can equip these young individuals with the skills they need to thrive academically and contribute positively to our community.
We are calling for action to support the S.L.I.G.H.T. initiative dedicated to enhancing the research abilities and skills of our young researchers. This initiative is designed to empower our youth by providing them with valuable resources, guidance, and mentorship in the field of science and research. This program is crucial for empowering our young minds, particularly those who lack access to essential scientific knowledge and resources. By providing free consultation and mentorship, S.L.I.G.H.T. seeks to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and hands-on experience in science and research.
By investing in programs like S.L.I.G.H.T., we can create a supportive environment that nurtures curiosity and fosters critical thinking among our youth. Enhancing their research abilities not only benefits the individual students but also enriches our community as a whole. A generation of skilled young researchers can bring innovative ideas and solutions to local challenges, ultimately strengthening our collective future.
