Share the stories of Aboriginal athletes in history
The Issue
Canada’s history is rich with diverse cultures and heritage, yet the stories of Aboriginal athletes often remain untold and uncelebrated. Aboriginal athletes have significantly contributed to Canadian sports, demonstrating extraordinary resilience, talent, and determination throughout history. Despite their impact, many Aboriginal athletes have been historically overlooked or underrepresented, limiting public understanding and recognition.
The importance of recognizing Aboriginal athletes lies not only in honoring their accomplishments but also in understanding their journeys and the challenges they have overcome. These stories are crucial in inspiring future generations of Aboriginal youth, who can find role models that resonate with their own experiences and cultural backgrounds. By highlighting these athletes, we can foster a stronger, more inclusive appreciation for diversity in sports and encourage wider participation in athletic pursuits among Indigenous communities.
We call upon governments, educators, historians, and sporting organizations to fully implement Call to Action 87 by actively sharing and promoting the stories of Aboriginal athletes in Canadian history. We demand dedicated efforts to research, document, and celebrate the rich history of Aboriginal contributions to Canadian sports. By recognizing their achievements through curriculums and museums, we aim to increase awareness, challenge historical erasure, and ensure Indigenous athletes are represented in the national narrative.
Sign this petition to support the celebration and recognition of Aboriginal athletes in Canadian history. Together, we can help combat stereotypes, support Indigenous pride and identity, inspire the next generation, and promote true diversity, equity, and inclusion in our nation’s sporting legacy.
