The Issue

Imagine sitting through an entire class with your throat dry and aching, unable to have a sip of water simply because you're not allowed to leave your seat. For students like me, who have Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), this scenario is a daily reality. EoE is a chronic immune system disease that makes it difficult and sometimes painful to swallow. Without regular access to water, my throat feels like sandpaper, and focusing on my studies becomes nearly impossible. Sadly, this is not just my story—it's an experience shared by many students across Virginia.

Teachers have varied policies regarding water and bathroom breaks during classes, often leaving students to suffer in silence, confused and stressed about the basic necessities. With no consistent guidelines or rules in place, students with medical conditions, like me, face unfair obstacles during our school day, negatively impacting our health and academic performance.

The lack of uniform policies means that not all teachers understand or accommodate those who require water or bathroom breaks regularly. This lack of understanding and flexibility can lead to extreme physical discomfort, decreased concentration, and additional stress for students who are simply trying to manage their health needs while attending school.

Virginia's state educational leaders need to establish statewide policies that ensure all students have easy access to water and bathroom facilities during school hours. These rules should clearly accommodate medical conditions requiring regular hydration and restroom breaks to ensure all students have the opportunity to learn comfortably and effectively.

By implementing clear, standardized policies, schools can foster an inclusive and supportive environment where every student's needs are respected. Such policies would remove the inconsistent barriers that currently stand in the way of learning and health.

We must step up and advocate for our fellow students. Join me in urging state leaders to take decisive action. Sign this petition to demand that Virginia's educational policymakers set clear guidelines that guarantee timely access to water and bathroom facilities for every student in our schools.

This is a huge problem and puts students in a lot of pain. With EOE or not, teachers should allow all students to fulfill their basic needs. Please sign this petition if you support and agree.
