What if:
- a child being treated by a GP for recurring nightmares, and all Australian GPs were trained to conduct an assessment for trauma? Not just for children, but also for adults?
- social, wellbeing and teaching staff in schools and all educational institutions, were trained to identify trauma?
- intake processes for all community health, social, welfare, addiction, homelessness, disability, relationship, violence and unemployment services included an assessment for trauma?
- police, justice services and prisons, included training in basic questions to ask about trauma, and prison intake systems included an assessment for trauma?
- parents/carers/guardians of children who have experienced trauma, or adults who have experienced the trauma of child maltreatment, didn't have to navigate all the health, social and justice systems themselves, as all those services they need are identified and coordinated for them by a social worker or case manager?
The outcomes of governments implementing integrated wellbeing and social care systems underpinned by a principle of 'no wrong door', as proven by those countries and places where this exists, are:
- less children and adults end up experiencing chronic health conditions and social disadvantage, due to early intervention, and receiving all of the services and supports they need,
- health and social care systems cost less money for governments to fund whilst at the same time, delivering more services, because of the reduction of the chronic health and social care needs of communities which are the most expensive to fund, and
- increases in identification of crimes associated with trauma, increases the opportunity of appropriate action by legal and justice systems, which improves prevention of these crimes, and opportunties for justice for victims of crimes.
Integrated services underpinned by the principle of 'no wrong door' we're asking the Federal and Victorian governments to pilot in the Bayside Melbourne and Ballarat regions means:
- these pilots would benefit all Victorians living in those areas who have experienced child maltreatment not just institutional child sexual abuse,
- would benefit anyone living with trauma regardless of the cause, and
- means all Victorians in those areas requiring coordinated wellbeing and social services and supports, regardless of the cause, would also benefit.
Because accessible services and supports are those which don't require people knowing what services and supports they need. Nor do they require people to find and coordinate all the services and supports they need.
