Separate High School graduations

The Issue

As a whole deeply impacted by the current structure of graduation, we raise our voice to make a change- the students of Memorial High School. We acknowledge the disparity that exists from the fact the Wilson students start off with an educational advantage over us due to taking college classes since the 9th grade and in comparison, we graduate feeling less worthy due to the significant difference between the school standards.

This acknowledgment of the difference between the schools lower the self-esteem of some students and consequently affects our chances for college admissions. It's a fact that students' motivation correlates with their academic and overall achievements. Knowing this, it may be why some students at Memorial don't see the need to try as hard because they know they will always stand lower than students at Wilson. This is a testament to our lowered motivation levels when we are forced to constantly measure ourselves against Wilson students, jeopardizing out potential academic accomplishments.

A solution we seek is for the district and both High Schools to acknowledge these differences and separate graduation ceremonies for Woodrow Wilson Early College and Memorial High School. This not only ensures a focus on the achievements of students from both schools independently but also helps in creating a more positive and motivation environment for Memorial High School now and in the future.

Our request is simple: understand and acknowledge the disparity and allow us to celebrate our accomplishments beyond the shadow which has fallen across the stage at graduation for the past few years. Take a step towards encouraging every student, especially Memorial students, by showing that their accomplishments do matter and are not for nothing. Sign our petition to  make a difference because separate graduations do not mean separate values, but equal recognition.
