It’s sadly, official. The Center for Whale Research announces the population of the Southern Resident Orcas is now 73. J17 Princess Angeline—42 year old female and matriarch of her family, K25 Scoter—28 year old male, L84 Nyssa—29 year old male, all declared dead.

Princess Angeline’s death is the most serious for the Southern Residents, since it leaves her 10 year old son J44 Moby and 4 year old daughter J53 Kiki without a mom. The rest of Princess Angeline’s living family is her daughter 21 year old J35 Tahlequah—the mom who carried her dead calf for 17 days last year, 10 year old granddaughter J46 Star, and Tahlequah’s offspring, 9 year old male J47 Notch.

This family will need lots of help from the rest of J pod if it is to survive.
