SEGA: Restore Sonic's Legacy – Reintroduce Sally & Freedom Fighters, Clarify Canon

The Issue

To: SEGA Corporation, Sonic Team, and the Sonic the Hedgehog Franchise Team Sonic the Hedgehog turns 35 in 2026! As SEGA celebrates with "Sonic Rewind" – digital retrospectives, fan gatherings, exclusive merch, concerts, podcasts, and more – it's the perfect moment to truly honor the full history of the franchise. Sonic thrives on freedom: speed, rebellion, friendship, and bold evolution. Yet for too long, narrative stagnation, unclear canon rules, and the sidelining of beloved Western-era characters have held back that spirit. We, the passionate Sonic community – longtime fans of SatAM, Archie Comics, games, movies, and beyond – respectfully demand meaningful steps to restore narrative integrity, recognize Western contributions, and let the series grow with its aging audience.

Our Core Demands (Non-Negotiable Foundations):

I. Canon & Narrative Policy: Formally clarify and publish: Is Classic Sonic the past of Modern Sonic, or a separate dimension? Commit to a binding rule against future retcons that contradict this.

Relax or revise mandates preventing permanent character development, long-term consequences, and emotional continuity across stories.

Publicly acknowledge Archie Comics and SatAM as legitimate, long-running interpretations – their end was due to legal issues, not quality or fan disinterest.

II. Character Policy: Reintroduce Sally Acorn into modern continuity with a leadership/resistance/strategic role aligned to her core themes (freedom, responsibility, resistance) – no forced romance, but no prohibition either.

Apply consistent standards for introducing new characters (e.g., Trip, Lanolin) as those for legacy Western ones – no replacement of unresolved figures.

Remove any preferential treatment for romantic pairings (including Sonamy) in official policy – let outcomes emerge naturally from stories.

III. Comics & Media Policy: allow a PG-13 tonal ceiling in Sonic comics: darker themes, moral ambiguity, irreversible stakes – the audience has matured; the franchise should too.

Clarify IDW Sonic as a new, separate continuity – not a successor or replacement for Archie – and stop using comparisons to dismiss valid criticism.

Permit recurring villains with independent ideologies and long-term survival (beyond disposable resets).

IV. Media Adaptations: Do not mandate Sonic/Amy romance in the film universe – it conflicts with the movies' themes of freedom and found family.

Ensure cross-media consistency: no arbitrary exclusion of characters for non-narrative reasons.

V. Historical Accountability: Release a formal statement: Archie cancellation was primarily legal complications (e.g., rights disputes), not creative rejection.

Differentiate creative contributions from legal conflicts in messaging about former collaborators – end revisionism.

What We're Willing to Compromise On (Concessions for Realistic Progress):

Sally's reintroduction can start in comics only (e.g., multiverse cameo or IDW tie-in).

No immediate romance confirmation for any pairing.

Gradual mandate reform over time, not instant overhaul.

IDW remains active and valued alongside any legacy nods.

Sonic is more than games – it's a global legacy of rebellion and heart. Without narrative freedom as a structural principle, the franchise survives but doesn't truly evolve.During this 35th Anniversary year, let's make "Rewind" mean looking back to move forward stronger. Sign if you want SEGA to listen, restore trust, and give fans the mature, cohesive Sonic we deserve!
