Seeking Justice for Victims of Unsolved "Fort Hood" Murders
The Issue
Having had the profound experience of working closely with the families of victims such as Taquilla, the cousin of Marcus Lamarr Nelson Sr., and others, we are demanding that authorities in Killeen, Texas and at Fort Cavazos finally perform complete and thorough investigations, and release key information and data surrounding suspect soldier deaths.
I have worked with these family members, I have listened to their agonizing stories, shared in their grief, and listened to their desperate pleas for justice. With deep military connections in my family, it pains me to witness the dismissive manner in which these soldiers—who dedicated their lives to serving our country—are being treated by the authorities at Fort Cavazos, the Bell County Sheriff's Office, and the Killeen Police Department. Their investigations have been, at best, sloppy and inconclusive, failing to bring closure to the families whose lives have been affected irreparably by these disturbing tragedies.
In 2019, PV2 Gregory Wedel-Morales was murdered in Killeen, yet his killer remains at large. Authorities, in fact, were hesitant to even search for Gregory when he went missing from the base, and were only forced to actually begin searching when another soldier, named Vanessa Guillén, went missing, and Fort Hood was forced into the national spotlight. To this day, Gregory's killer(s) remain at large, and the details surrounding his tragic and mysterious death remain unknown.
Similarly, the 2011 murder of Army and Marine Corps veteran Candance "Candy" Boley, and the suspicious 2020 death of Spc. Shelby Tyler Jones from a gunshot wound, cry out for justice. The families of these brave individuals deserve thorough and competent investigations, conducted with dignity and respect for the fallen and their loved ones.
"Candy" Boley was found murdered in her own home in 2011. Despite having a suspect in mind, local authorities have never made an arrest in this case and have never solved this crime.
Spc. Shelby Tyler Jones was found dead in the parking lot of a gas station in Killeen in 2020, and the authorities, from what I can tell, refuse to investigate this homicide. It seems that they have done everything in their power not to solve this crime. But why?
Moreover, the suicides at Fort Hood, which include the tragic cases of Ana Basaldua Ruiz and Elder Fernandes, along with the perplexing 2016 death of Sgt. Marcus Lamarr Nelson Sr., who died in a Bell County detention center, warrant an extensive and independent investigation. The pattern of negligence and insensitivity cannot continue.
We call upon local law enforcement, Fort Hood's commanding officers, and elected officials to allocate necessary resources and expertise to solve these deeply troubling and unsolved cases. These soldiers were not just members of our military—they were human beings, beloved family members, and valuable parts of our community in Killeen, Texas. We must uphold their honor by ensuring that every unanswered question is met with rigorous scrutiny and that justice is finally served.
There are many, many cases which could be highlighted here which do not make sense from an outside perspective.
For example, there is also the highly suspicious death of Staff Sgt. Devin Lee Schuette, who was found deceased in his vehicle, apparently after choosing to end his own life. However, there are circumstances surrounding his death, such as a blood-covered man seen by his family members acting suspicious on the night of his death, stab wounds that seemed to have been defensive wounds observed on his corpse, and police malfeasance that have caused his family to question the official narrative.
In 2016, Sgt. Marcus Lamarr Nelson Sr. began to post on his social media about corrupt leadership in the military that he had seen and experienced first hand. And only a few weeks later, he disappeared from Fort Hood, where he was stationed at the time, and ended up dead, in police custody. The circumstances surrounding his death have never been clarified to the public, and we are demanding immediate and complete transparency.
Please join us in demanding accountability and resolution. Sign this petition to spur decisive action and to honor the memory of those we have tragically lost. Together, let's ensure no further loss goes unnoticed and unaddressed.
