Seek Justice for Zeus, the Pit Bull Service Dog Shot by Police

The Issue

As an individual living with autism, I witness daily the immense love and companionship provided by service dogs. They are more than just pets - they are lifelines. That's why the story of Zeus, a mental health service dog shot multiple times by Windsor police, moved me greatly.  https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/windsor-police-shoot-dog-complaint-1.7569521

Zeus, a pit bull, was banned in Windsor due to breed-specific legislation. nevertheless, he was a constant companion to his owner, assisting him during challenging episodes of mental health crisis. Tragically, during one such crisis, Zeus was shot multiple times by the police, right in front of his handcuffed dad.

The police claimed that the man had instructed Zeus to be aggressive. However, we ask for fair consideration and investigation into this matter. Breed-specific legislation has been criticized heavily for being ineffective, with no strong evidence supporting its ability to prevent serious dog-bite injuries (source: American Veterinary Medical Association). It's essential to note that any dog, regardless of its breed, can behave aggressively based on numerous factors like upbringing and environment.

Mental health service animals, like Zeus, are trained to be friendly, cooperative, and helpful during crises. The allegation that a service dog turned aggressive under his mentally distressed owner's direction needs objective scrutiny. We must remember that people with mental health conditions often depend largely on their service animals for support and stability.

We are asking for an independent investigation into the tragic shooting of Zeus, and a subsequent review of breed-specific legislation in Ontario.  Our effort here is not only to seek justice for Zeus but also to work towards a society where people and animals receive kind and compassionate treatment. Please sign this petition to support our cause.
