Save the Amazon

Save the Amazon

The Issue

In 21st century we are gifted with the amazing ability to interact with everybody around the globe. We are no longer dependant on the news channels and papers for knowledge about whats happening around us. If this was the case, nobody would have any idea about the Amazon disaster due to a non existent media coverage on the topic. The extreme fires have been raging for over two weeks now. I strongly believe that it is in our hands to show how much we disagree with poisoning our planet and frankly cutting off our 20% of oxygen supply. If enough people support this, then we will be heard. The EU has laws that can be used to battle this disgrace. The US has laws to battle this disgrace. However it seems that in order for them to take action, they need to hear it from the masses!

This simply can not go on without rep-precautions. If it does, the world indeed has become a sad and unlawful place and the amazing technology we have today is being wasted on our self destruction. Please read below if you'd like to find out more about the state of affairs in the Amazon region.

The Amazon rain forest has been hit with raging wildfires. According to the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) fires have hit a record number this year, with nearly 73,000 fires detected in 2019. This is a surge of 83 percent over the same period in 2018. And since Thursday, INPE satellites have captured more than 9,500 new forest fires as the raging infernos continue to grow.

Data shows that deforestation in the Amazon has surged since Bolsonaro assumed office. According to a report by (INPE), about 870 square miles of the Amazon rainforest was destroyed by man-made fires last month, marking a 278-percent increase from July 2018. Bolsonaro called the data "a lie" and subsequently fired INPE's director Ricardo Galvão.

Mr Bolsonaro took office in January and supported developing the Amazon region for farming and mining.

Researcher Alberto Setzer said: “There is nothing abnormal about the climate this year or the rainfall in the Amazon region, which is just a little below average".

“The dry season creates the favourable conditions for the use and spread of fire, but starting a fire is the work of humans, either deliberately or by accident.”

Said deforestation and illegal attempt at setting off the fires can get rid of the precious eco-system. Not only precious for the nature lovers, but for our own survival. The Amazon rain forest contributes to the global content of Oxygen by 20%.
