Secure UK Small Rail Stations During Night Hours

Secure UK Small Rail Stations During Night Hours
The Issue
I am a resident deeply affected by the events of the past years where lives were lost in unnecessary incidents involving trains at small rail stations. My best friend was hit by a train in a fatal accident on June 3rd, 2024 and a family member a few years previous. It's painful to think that these tragic events could have been avoided if the stations were properly secured during off-peak hours.
Unfortunately, my family and friends stories are not unique. Across the UK, many small rail stations remain unmanned and unsecured during the night, posing a significant risk not just to passengers but people in the vicinity.
According to the Office of Rail and Road's annual health and safety report of 2019/20, trespassing and suicides on UK railways marked a 12% increase from the previous year and 236 deaths by train 2022/23 . It's alarming that while we progress towards a safer transportation system, such avoidable risks are not adequately mitigated.
Our petition seeks the commitment of local authorities to implement security measures at all small rail stations across the UK during the night. This could involve station closures at off-peak hours, installation of proper lighting and surveillance systems, or the implementation of barriers to prevent trespassing. Neglecting these safety precautions is no longer an option; we owe it to our community and to people who have unnecessarily lost their lives.
Please show your support by signing our petition and join us in urging the government to take prompt action. Together, we can ensure our small rail stations are safer for us all at any given time of the day.
