Secure sustainable water supply for Douglas Shire

Secure sustainable water supply for Douglas Shire

The issue

As a resident deeply concerned about the future of our beloved Douglas Shire, I am witnessing first-hand the dire state of our water supply. Our tourism-driven shire’s water supply sits  at critically low  storage levels, with stage four water restrictions having been in place for months with no change in the foreseeable future. The situation is so severe that we are on the brink of a water crisis with the threat of water supplies being completely cut during the peak tourist season. Instead of spending over $200 million on vulnerable water supply infrastructure that may never meet the needs of our growing community again, it's time to prioritize an urgent and sustainable solution - a pipeline from Quaid’s dam.

The proposed solution involves utilizing Quaid’s dam, which sits idle just 35km west of Port Douglas. By implementing a gravity feed pipeline to the tanks at Craiglie and establishing a new purpose-built filtration plant, we can secure our future water supply and alleviate current issues such as silt troubles in existing filtration systems.

This isn't just about securing our immediate needs; it's about future-proofing Douglas Shire against further crises. With your support, we can urge local authorities to act swiftly and decisively in implementing this robust infrastructure while also actively seeking other sources of water.

Please join me in calling for this vital change for Douglas Shire by signing this petition today! Together, let's ensure that every drop counts towards securing our community's future!
