The Issue

The gunman who opened fire at Florida State University—killing two and wounding six—used a former service weapon belonging to his mother, a longtime sheriff’s deputy. Authorities say he had access to the firearm at home and used it to carry out the attack.

This isn’t just a tragedy—it’s a systemic failure.

Law enforcement families must be held to the same standards of firearm safety and accountability as civilians—if not higher. Police and sheriff’s departments nationwide require secure weapon storage on duty, but many still allow off-duty officers to bring powerful weapons home with few safeguards in place.

That has to change.

We’re calling on state lawmakers in Florida and nationwide to pass laws requiring safe storage of firearms in homes where law enforcement weapons are kept—especially where minors or family members live. Officers should be trained and required to lock up their service weapons and held accountable if they’re used in crimes.

No more excuses. No more unlocked weapons. No more preventable tragedies.

Sign now if you believe police weapons should never end up in the hands of shooters.
