Good News! The Albanese government unveiled its for fuel efficiency standards for new cars in February this year.
The proposed model would place a yearly cap on the emissions output for new cars sold in Australia to incentivise carmakers to supply low- and zero-emissions vehicles and penalise companies that do not.
The new standards – which will apply only to new cars – will establish emissions targets that car makers must meet across their vehicle fleets. Over time, this CO2 target will be lowered, forcing companies to provide more efficient cars.
The Government’s preferred emissions-limit model intends to catch up to the United States, which has lower standards than Europe, by 2028, with an average annual CO2 reduction of 12.2 per cent for passenger cars and 12.4 per cent for light commercial vehicles between 2025 and 2029. However, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries is trying to get the government to adopt less stringent standards.
Adopting the same standards as the USA is surely the minimum we can do and we must not allow the government to be pressurised by the FCAI and some large vehicle manufacturing companies to water these standards down any further.
Please sign and share this petition to show the government that we strongly support the adoption of these standards and would like even stronger ones to be introduced in the near future.
