Secure our energy future: Australia must implement Fuel Efficiency Standards

The issue

Australia, alongside Russia, is one of the only developed countries that does not have vehicle fuel efficiency standards. This has resulted in us becoming the dumping ground for inefficient cars that can’t be sold in other parts of the world, and the absence of fuel standards is the reason why electric vehicles are out of reach for the majority of Australians.

The energy crisis facing Australia is a wake up call to secure our energy supply, and in doing so, reduce our vulnerability to future price hikes.

This is why I am calling on the Federal Government to implement Fuel Efficiency Standards as a matter of national urgency.

Under these standards, car manufacturers must make sure that their fleets meet certain efficiency criteria. This will incentivise vehicle companies to increase their supply of EV’s into the market, helping to meet the existing demand. Europe’s vehicle standards have been hugely successful, reducing transport emissions, stimulating the economy and appealing broadly to consumers.

In Australia, this decision would reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, save taxpayer money and reduce our reliance on overseas oil. $1 billion is how much money tax-payers could have saved if fuel efficiency standards were put in place back in 2016.

Please sign this petition to call on our new government to #AdoptFuelStandards and in doing so, bring us up to the same standards enjoyed by the rest of the world.

The stakes are too high not to.

Thank you,

Debi
