The Issue

In our community, at least 120 children have been deprived of the opportunity to learn an essential life skill – swimming. The local public pool, where our swimming club usually trains, has recently informed us that they cannot allocate lane swimming space for our club due to a lack of facilities. This decision has impacted hundreds of young swimmers and could potentially hinder their development, physically and socially.

Swimming is not just a sport; it is a crucial life skill, offering tremendous health benefits ranging from cardiovascular fitness to muscle strength development. More importantly, it provides the necessary skills to help prevent drowning – a leading cause of accidental injury-related death for children. It is imperative that we support and nurture these abilities from a young age.

Our swimming club plays a vital role in our community. It not only offers these children a chance to learn how to swim but also provides them with a sense of belonging, discipline, and a chance to increase their self-esteem. For many families in our area, accessing these essential facilities through the club is the most feasible option.

Given the sizable number of children affected, it is essential to reassess the allocation of resources and space at the local public pool. By doing so, we can ensure every child has access to swimming lessons and can learn in a safe and conducive environment. The local public pool should collaborate with our club to find a viable solution that benefits the community at large.

We propose a solution that involves creating a timetable that allows lane swimming for our club at specific times, ensuring minimal disruption to public access. Additionally, the local council should explore temporary solutions such as portable lane dividers, facilitating even partial lane swimming to get our program back on track.

Please support this cause by signing the petition. Together, we can provide our children with the facilities they deserve and ensure they are safe, healthy, and empowered.
