The Issue

We have worked relentlessly for the past 3-5 years, beginning with a rigorous access course, followed by four years of university training as a midwife. During this time, we have been signed off on all proficiencies and have meticulously kept up with the demanding training requirements. This journey required us to complete a significant amount of work to be certified. Despite proving our abilities through 2,300 hours of unpaid work, studying, and passing multiple exams, we are still required to endure a daunting and often unrealistic interview process to secure a job in our field.

The current system in the UK fails student midwives like me, who have shown dedication, resilience, and competence throughout their training. Midwifery students are required to complete numerous practical hours alongside rigorous academic commitments. Yet, after all this hard work, the security of a job remains uncertain due to an overly complicated interview process (if shortlisted).

Student midwives are integral to the future of healthcare. We deserve to transition smoothly into the workforce after proving our skills and dedication during our training periods. However, the current system places unnecessary barriers before us at the very end of our journey, resulting in burnout and mental, physical, and emotional stress.

To build a healthier future for the UK healthcare system, it is essential to ensure that every qualified student midwife is guaranteed a position upon completing their training. Scrapping or significantly revising the current interview process is imperative to this cause.

Statistics show that the UK (and the world) is facing a shortage of healthcare professionals, including midwives. According to data from the NHS, this shortage impacts the quality of patient care and places undue stress on the existing workforce. By securing guaranteed job placements for student midwives, we not only support these dedicated individuals but also bolster the overall NHS workforce and enhance patient care across the country.

We urge the government and healthcare authorities to recognise the pressing need for change. Ensuring a seamless transition from training to employment for student midwives is not only beneficial for the professionals themselves but also crucial for the well-being of our community. Support our call to action to secure a brighter future for both midwives and patients. Sign this petition to reform the employment process for student midwives in the UK.
