Secure Government Funding for Free Centrelink Legal Assistance

The issue

Welfare Rights Centre is the only specialist community legal centre in NSW that helps people in crisis situations with Centrelink.

We offer free legal assistance to vulnerable people to access payments and resolve unfair debts.

For over 40 years our clients have included women leaving abusive relationships, persons with disability seeking to live independently in the community, youth completing higher education, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as well as people and communities rebuilding their lives after natural disasters.

Welfare Rights Centre played a key role in advocating for vulnerable clients caught in the Robodebt scheme and gave evidence advocating for reforms through the subsequent Royal Commission.

Already we are struggling to maintain our services in the face of overwhelming demand.

  • Every year we receive 11,000 calls from 3000 individuals
  • Each quarter 500 people are not able to get through
  • We can only offer appointments to less than half of callers

The Welfare Rights Centre needs your help now!

Without ongoing support from the Federal and NSW Governments, we will be unable to maintain our vital services, leaving many vulnerable people without the help they need.

Read our critical funding update below, or see the highlights in our latest newsletter.

Please sign and share this petition if you believe that the government should provide a specialist social security funding stream to ensure Welfare Rights Centre can continue to help the most vulnerable people in our community.
