STOP the 90 Freeway Tear Down!
October 5, 2023
Mayor Karen Bass
200 N. Spring Street Room 303
Los Angeles, CA 90012
Dear Mayor Bass,
Please accept this letter as a respectful request to withdraw your letter of support for the Marina Central Park feasibility study federal grant application you submitted to the US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. As of the date of this letter, more than time 4,500+ people have signed the STOP the 90 Freeway Tear Down! petition I organized on change.org.
Mayor Bass you have shocked and disappointed many of your constituents with your declaration that the CA 90 Freeway is a “freeway to nowhere.” The people of Ladera Heights, Culver City, Marina, del Rey, Westchester, Windsor Hills/View Park and surrounding communities use the 90 Freeway everyday for work, health care access, shopping, entertainment and other quality of life services. The CA 90 Freeway is a “freeway to everywhere” for many of us residing in Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles. We should have had a voice before the proposed feasibility study federal grant request was submitted. We should have a say before it is approved. The 4,500+ supporters of STOP the 90 Freeway Tear Down! demand the Streets For All feasibility study federal grant application be DENIED in its entirety!
It is to our understanding that the City of Los Angeles is too busy with other projects to sign on as the leading agency for the Streets For All $2 million Marina Central Park feasibility study federal grant request. Culver City has wisely chosen to pass on being the leading agency for the CA 90 Freeway tear down feasibility study due to Streets For All’s FAILURE to gather input from community members – those who will bear the brunt of this decision. I along with the 4,500+ STOP the 90 Freeway Tear Down! petition supporters deserve to know “who is the leading agency for the 90 freeway tear down application submitted to Secretary Pete Buttigieg?”
The proposed 90 freeway tear down has raised significant concerns among Los Angeles County District 2 residents of Ladera Heights, Marina del Rey, Windsor Hills, Culver City and Westchester regarding its potential disruptive public safety and quality of life consequences. While residents understand the need for infrastructure improvements and urban development, it is crucial that these decisions are made with careful consideration for constituents who will be most affected by them. Windsor Hills/View Park, Baldwin Hills and Ladera Heights are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd most affluent African American communities in the nation. How can you ignore our voices? Our communities have worked hard to create a safe and prosperous environment for our families and we believe that our input should be considered before the federal grant request for the Marina Central Park is reviewed. The 4,500+ supporters of STOP the 90 Freeway Tear Down! demand the Streets For All feasibility study federal grant application be DENIED in its entirety!
Mayor Bass, I’d like to request a meeting with you to discuss the true value of the CA 90 freeway in further detail. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Regard,
Daphne Bradford
