Make Post-16 Compulsory Education Travel Affordable for All
The Issue
Parents are struggling to pay for their children to attend college/sixth form due to travel costs imposed - often based on an 'adult' fare. Post-16 Education is compulsory therefore travel should be free of charge to provide equal opportunities for all 16-18 year olds. At the very least they should be able to travel on a child fare and have the facility to pay on a daily basis rather than imposed termly bulk payments. Many parents cannot afford to pay in advance. Central government need to ensure that County Councils and bus companies are providing the fairest possible options to parents. Currently, in some areas, this is not the case, particularly rural areas where there is a dire lack of public transport available.
