Federal regulations from the Department of Education currently threaten to cause the closure of one-third of America’s cosmetology schools, which will leave an already under-staffed industry in peril. We ask that the President and Secretary of Education continue to take action to prevent this from happening.
The original intention of the regulations was noble but the unintended consequences could be disastrous for students and schools in the cosmetology industry. Regulators wanted to prevent students from being targeted by unscrupulous administrators at for-profit schools while at the same time protecting taxpayers who provide the money for federal student loans. But, in writing rules intended for large for-profit chains that offer multiple degrees with little chance for a real job, federal rule makers largely ignored the fact that cosmetology schools are really trade schools that usually offer just a single program that provides hands-on training for careers that are in high demand. In fact, federal officials admit that the regulations unfairly treat cosmetology schools by using inaccurate data in their metrics.
The rules were so unfairly developed that a federal judge recently ruled against the Department of Education and now the Department of Education is engaged in developing new rules to better address the realities of cosmetology and other programs. We applaud the efforts of the Secretary of Education to address these concerns and encourage the President and the Department of Education to continue to make the necessary changes to allow cosmetology schools to remain open and students have continued opportunities for success.
