The bill claims to address women's issues, yet it dangerously disregards pressing areas such as the use of the words 'woman' and 'women' in existing legislation and women's widespread real-world challenges. Instead of empowering, it weaponises the language around women's rights as a facade to promote discriminatory practices.
Recently, there has been an increasing use of fear-mongering by right-wing politicians, falsely painting transgender and intersex individuals as threats to women's safety. This narrative fosters division and enmity within our society, while tangible evidence consistently shows that transgender and intersex individuals are more likely to be victims of violence rather than perpetrators.
Statistics reveal that transgender individuals face alarmingly high rates of discrimination and violence. A report by Transgender Europe (TGEU) highlights that 350 transgender and gender-diverse people were killed globally in 2020 alone. These figures are indicative of the precarious situation transgender individuals are already in, and how little is done to protect them from harm.
The Gender Definition Bill will do nothing to enhance women's protection but will, in fact, increase the risks for transgender and intersex community members by limiting their rights. This bill stands as a stark contrast to the inclusive and progressive values that New Zealand has long championed.
I urge the New Zealand Parliament to reconsider this harmful legislation and redirect efforts towards creating policies that ensure equitable access to opportunities, safety, and support for all women, including transgender and intersex individuals.
