SCRAP THE BBC!!
The Issue
This petition calls for the Government and Parliament to consider whether the BBC should continue to exist in its current form as a publicly funded national broadcaster.
The media landscape has changed dramatically. Traditional live television is declining, particularly among younger audiences, while streaming and online platforms have become increasingly important sources of entertainment and information. Government figures say that in 2024–25, streaming and video-sharing platforms accounted for 74% of video viewing among 16–24-year-olds.
We believe the BBC should no longer be treated as an institution that everyone is required to support. Instead, its future should be determined by whether people voluntarily choose to use and fund its services.
This petition calls for:
The abolition of the BBC in its current publicly funded form.
An end to compulsory public funding of the BBC.
The BBC's services, where commercially viable, to operate through subscriptions, advertising or other voluntary revenue models.
Greater accountability regarding the BBC's editorial standards, impartiality and use of public money.
A public debate about whether maintaining a national broadcaster of this scale remains appropriate in the modern media environment.
The Government is already reviewing the BBC's future through its Royal Charter Review, with the current Charter due to expire at the end of 2027. The review is considering the BBC's remit, governance and funding, including greater commercial revenue.
This petition is asking for the bigger question to be considered: does the BBC still need to exist as a publicly funded institution, or should people simply be free to choose whether they want its services
