The Issue

Scrap the North Lanarkshire Brown Bin Charge

From 1st June 2025, North Lanarkshire Council’s Labour administration will impose a £40 annual charge for brown bin collections—without public consultation and with unfair rules.

While this charge may have been included in previous budget discussions, it’s now clear that the way it’s being implemented is deeply unfair and unworkable. That’s why we’re calling for it to be scrapped.

Council tenants will have the cost spread through their rent, while homeowners, private renters, and housing association tenants must pay the full £40 up front. This creates a two-tier system that punishes people based on their housing status.

This charge is being introduced at a time when households are already struggling with a 10% Council Tax rise and soaring energy bills. Yet, the Council has received a record-breaking funding grant from the Scottish Government—money meant to fund services for everyone, not just some.

There is no financial or moral justification for this policy. It’s unfair, unnecessary, and must be scrapped.

Sign the petition today and contact your Labour Councillor to demand they reverse this decision. Let’s bin the bin charge.
