Scrap fuel duty indefinitely
The Issue
As a motorist, I've had enough of witnessing drivers like myself and haulage companies being unjustly squeezed for every penny. It's not the fluctuating price of fuel that's the problem, but the ever-present invisible fuel duty tax that has become the true bane of road users. Take a closer look: the current price of unleaded fuel hits 158.9 pence per litre. Strip away the fuel duty and VAT, and the real fuel cost shrinks to 79.47 pence per litre. It's alarming to note that the fuel duty alone stands at 52.95 pence per litre, with an additional VAT of 26.48 pence per litre.
For every trip you take, every route a haulage truck navigates, there’s a disproportionate amount of money being funneled away, putting a burden not only on individual drivers but on the entire transport and logistics sector. It's a tax that affects everyone directly and indirectly by increasing the cost of goods due to higher transport expenses. When delivery costs rise, so do the prices of basic commodities, affecting every household in Britain.
It's time to petition the UK Government to scrap this unfair levy once and for all. The revenue raised from fuel duty was expected to contribute to the maintenance and development of road infrastructure. However, with the advances in technology and the push towards more sustainable transport options, the reliance on traditional fuel-based taxation is neither sustainable nor fair on those whose livelihoods depend on road transport.
Instead, we should focus on creating a more equitable taxation framework that balances the needs of drivers with environmental goals. Transition assistance for those moving to greener vehicles, as well as incrementally adjusted taxation or incentives for clean energy options, is more constructive.
We deserve a fair system that protects drivers and businesses from financial strain while promoting sustainable practices. Join me in calling for the permanent scrapping of fuel duty to ease the financial burden on drivers and haulage companies throughout the UK. Let's urge our leaders to rethink our taxation policies to better reflect the current economic and environmental landscape.
