It's been a while without an update on the wildcats at Clashindarroch Forest, but someone, somewhere, has said something, and our signatures total has leapt up to 430,000 in the last couple of weeks; incredible! Thanks to whoever it was, and to all the new signatories; the video above has some more detail on the campaign.
We have still had no acknowledgement from Scottish Government of the petition even existing, and no further responses from Forestry Commission Scotland. Vattenfall the wind farm company have indicated a commitment to seeing through the planning application process and letting it decide.
Some people in the local community have been making their feelings heard to myself and Wildcat Haven, with great concern over the size of the proposed turbines and the light pollution they will cause (they will have to be lit for air traffic safety), as well as expressing a concern for the wildcats and agreement over their need for protection.
There has been one major event in the last couple of weeks that it is very important to take on board. I'm currently preparing a new film documentary on the Scottish wildcat, and some of the Wildcat Haven fieldwork team have been helping me monitoring and studying the movements of specific cats in Clashindarroch for filming.
Heading out to pick up some cameras placed for this, one of the team discovered that, after a summer without any forestry activity, logging has now resumed in the terriotory of the wildcat we were studying. We are moving fast to respond to this resumed threat which is happening about a month before breeding season begins to develop, and I hope to be able to update you all on that very soon.
Please keep sharing the petition; can we make half a million by Christmas? Follow updates at www.facebook.com/ScottishWildcatHaven and I look forward to letting you all know what the next step will be in this story.
Thank you!
