Scottish Football Fans Say: VAR Is Failing Us – It’s Time for Change

Scottish Football Fans Say: VAR Is Failing Us – It’s Time for Change
The Issue
VAR was meant to bring clarity. Instead, it's bringing confusion, delays, and disillusionment.
A recent fan survey by The Well Society, the UK's first top-flight, fan owned club, showed 99.3% want change, with 63% calling for VAR to be scrapped entirely.
We're now calling on the SFA, SPFL, and clubs across the country to listen. Scottish football belongs to its supporters. It’s time for meaningful reform of VAR.
Scottish football fans have had enough. VAR is not working – and the numbers prove it.
The Well Society – the majority shareholders of Motherwell Football Club – recently conducted a major survey on VAR. The results were overwhelming:
- 99.3% of fans want VAR either reformed or scrapped altogether
- 63% support removing it completely
- 60% say VAR has made the matchday experience “significantly worse Supporters spoke of endless delays, poor communication, baffling decisions, and a growing distance between the fans and the game. A system meant to add clarity has delivered the opposite. And for what? At a cost of six figures per club, per season, money that could be invested in players, communities, or grassroots football.
We know we’re not alone in feeling this way. Fans across Scotland – from every club – have shared the same frustrations. This is about more than one team. This is about protecting the integrity, rhythm, and joy of Scottish football.
We’re calling for:
- A full, transparent review of how VAR is working in Scotland, with meaningful fan input
- An open debate about whether the benefits of VAR justify its financial and emotional cost
- A willingness to act, whether that means reforming VAR or removing it altogether Scottish football is nothing without its fans. The time for silence is over. Let’s bring the voice of supporters back to the centre of the game.
